Section: FEFNA News

There was a lot to share during the July 12, 2015 online FGNA Annual Meeting. Because time was short and not all members could be there, the Esther Thelen Research Committee would like to highlight its activities for you.

The committee operates under the auspices of the Feldenkrais® Educational Foundation of North America. Members include Patricia Buchanan, PhD, ATC, PT, GCFT (Chair); Roger Russell, MA, CFT, PT; and Jim Stephens, PhD, PT, GCFP.

We direct the Esther Thelen Research & Education Fund

The 3 objectives of the Fund are:

Objective 1: To provide grants for theoretically grounded research that extends and advances the Feldenkrais Method.

Objective 2-Not currently active: To provide grants to Feldenkrais practitioners or students in professional training programs that promote development and training in conducting quality research.

Objective 3: To provide grants for events or actions that bring together scientists and scholars, Feldenkrais practitioners, other professionals, policy makers, and the public for dialogue that facilitates improvement in the function and quality of individual lives and society.

We are very grateful to the generous donors who make these activities possible!

Objective 1 activities:
  • Currently one funded project in progress
    • Request for Research Grant Proposals will be coming soon!
    • Guidelines and deadlines will be announced in Guild News (or other official email outlet) and posted on our website1.
      • Documents from the last cycle are currently available there for review (NOT for submission)
Objective 3 activities:
  • Book-audio-video project in development based on a 2014 workshop with philosopher and dancer Maxine Sheets-Johnstone in her hometown of Yachats, Oregon. (See SenseAbility, Issue 65, Spring 2015)
    • At Annual Meeting, announced availability target was by end of 2015; due to changes in leadership, the new target is July 2016
    • Proceeds will go to the Esther Thelen Research & Education Fund
  • Feldenkrais Science Network2
    • Technical reorganizing in process this summer (and continuing this fall.)
    • Next approximation/phase 2 to follow
Grow the Fund!!
At the last Research Forum at the 2013 Annual Meeting, I declared my vision for the Esther Thelen Research and Education Fund: “$1 million or more by 2024.”

With more financial resources, we can expand our activities and impact. We invite your financial support and your help in inviting others to contribute.
